This morning, I chanced upon a video of Kirill Petrenko conducting John Cage’s 4′33″ with the Berlin Philharmonic, i.e., four minutes and thirty-three seconds of total silence. MASTAIA: S1_adagio1 (temp name)
This piece is from the Mastaia project, a substantial fiction project that I have been writing for several years. This piece expresses the idea of a mask through which one can glimpse the purity of truth, like a kind of hope amid incomprehension. Narratively, at least. It is an important theme in the first part of the work. It is especially meant to represent the relationship between a little boy and his mentor.
